Writing and Barking Blondes Essay - 1460 Words

Intro: This essay will investigate and explore the similarities and differences between the linguistic and presentational techniques used to have an effect on the reader used in two articles with the shared topic of pets. The first article is by two women who call themselves Barking Blondes, the use of the word Barking having two meanings: one relating to the sound dogs make and secondly referring to madness. This may be because they are slightly eccentric dog lovers. The formal online newspaper blog article is called Dealing with the death of a pet, and it informs, advises and entertains the two audiences of pet lovers and non-pet lovers; non pet lovers simply just finding it entertaining to read about the extremities that†¦show more content†¦Chris Pascoe also uses an anecdote in his article on his job as a cat sitter, ‘I saw a fellow cat sitter parked in a neighbours drive recently’. Similarly to the Barking Blondes article the pronoun ‘I’ builds a relationship with the reader as it feels like the writer is telling the reader his personal memories, and the noun ‘fellow’ creates a sense of community as the word means someone in the same group. The use of the phrase ‘fellow cat sitter’ may have also been used as a way of the writer making himself feel better about his somewhat ridiculous job with the fact that he is not the only person who has chosen ‘cat sitting’ as a career. Even though both texts use a pronoun and create a sense of community for the animal lover audience in both quotes, the ways in which they produce an effect from the reader are different. The ‘Cat Sitter’ article uses the pronoun ‘I’, which makes the article self-indulgent, and makes the reader think that the writer is letting them in on his personal life and job, which as you read on becomes apparent that it is not as interesting as made out. Unlike the ‘Barking Blondes’ arti cle that uses ‘we’, which connects to the reader in a more communal way. An Economic Event Intertwined With Credit Crunch - 951 Words

1.Introduction An economic event intertwined with credit crunch is the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis. In 2007, the subprime mortgage crisis dealt a huge economic blow to America and then had a great impact on the world economy. Although several actions, such as lowered the target for Federal funds rate and the discount rate, were taken, the crisis still had severe, long-lasting consequences, which makes the world economy still in a slow recovery so far. The credit crunch of 2007 was triggered by several factors. Analyzing the cause of credit crunch can help us reduce the probability of it and then prevent financial crisis in the future. This essay consists of three parts. At first, it will discuss some causes of the credit crunch of 2007.†¦show more content†¦****In the 1990s, shortage of financial capital and low-quality borrowers forced the banks to reduce the loan supply. The credit crunch of 2007 is more complicated than ever before. The first reason was that the acceleration of globalization involved more international investors, so the credit crunch had more global implications. And the other reason was that new ways of packaging and reselling assets had been introduced. Several factors should be taken into account when we trying to figure out what result in such a crisis. 2.2 The development of subprime mortgage market ****When discussing about the credit crunch of 2007, the United State subprime mortgage crisis is a good point to start with. The direct cause of this crisis was the bursting of the U.S. housing market bubble, but things can date back to about 2000. At the beginning of the 21st century, house prices in America started to experience an unprecedented rate of growth due to a low interest-rate environment. From 1997 - 2006, according to the Standard Poor’s / Case-Shiller national home-price index, the U.S. housing prices increased by 124%. There were a number of causes of this phenomena, such as the low Fed funds rate. Although other western countries also experienced the similar trends, for example, housing prices in the U.K. increased by 194%, while those

Traditional vs. Online College free essay sample

The first thing an enrollment counselor will assist a student with, after they have selected how they will attend and their major, will be getting familiar with the online learning system, which students are able to access at a campus and online. An enrollment counselor may invite you to a nearby campus if you have one and will also inform you that ‘all’ Phoenix students are welcome to the school and its student resource center or computer lab. In addition to the similarities described, both options include a 100% grading rubric, ebooks, participation credit, and learning teams. With all the similarities it may be a hard to distinguish a clear choice, but know that either is a rewarding opportunity. The differences in these two learning styles should aid in your final decision. After you have completed this reading, you will find out how interaction, classroom settings, and time commitment may play a part. Beginning with the most obvious difference, we will start with the classroom settings of each. On-ground classes, if available, are taught at a University of Phoenix campus and are typically one day a week. This may not be ideal for those who have busy schedules, a lack of reliable transportation, or just do not prefer to occupy a classroom. If any of the aforementioned items relate on a personal level, then an online classroom may be better. Classes will contain various age groups of other students and an instructor. Diversity is a common dynamic amongst University of Phoenix classes whether at a campus or online. Online classes offer more flexibility with schedules and work completion. This flexibility allows the students to decide exactly how their classroom setting will be. They have the freedom to choose when and where to complete assignments. There is no classroom etiquette to abide by so things like dress code and language are no problem. The online option limits social relationships with peers outside of school, so weigh this aspect around your dependency to sociability. More discipline is required when students do not have a teacher physically around but it is a key factor to have when attending college. Similar to the difference of watching a movie and reading a book, campus classes and online courses make interaction experiences special in their own way. Students will be able to interact with their peers and teachers in different methods. In a classroom, students can talk to people face-to-face and have the ability to perform hands-on activities. Some teachers may offer hard copies of their policies or even give out worksheets for completion. For those who may consider this a luxury, online classes will not be ideal for you. Online interaction could come through e-mails or video chat but accessibility is based on amenities. Time makes communication a possible issue when using emails or other forms of indirect communication. Online this is particularly the most used form of communication, so plan accordingly when dealing with time sensitive material. The online option limits social relationships with peers outside of school, so weigh this aspect around your dependency to sociability. When taking online courses students meet individuals from various places trying to complete the same goal, making a slight possibility of being in range to link up with other individuals. Interaction relates to an individual’s means of communication, so they should solidify their reasoning when shaping their future and contact efforts. A very valuable resource that can never be replenished is time. No matter what goes on, time will continue to pass and it is never fit to be wasted. Time commitment should also be taken into account when figuring whether to go to a campus or go the online route. Any free time could be used to complete assignments, but it’s a better approach to designate specific periods to accomplish work. Online courses have different days where participation will have to be earned, whereas at a campus points are accredited throughout the class and based on the in-class conversation. Going to a campus you must also set out time for the allotted day on which you attend your class. The time it may take to obtain a degree also varies. Working at your own pace online may expedite classes and present an early graduation date. The same way an individual would commit to paying for school and he or she would not want to waste his or her money, the same attitude should be duplicated with concern to their time. After hearing the major differences between the traditional way to attend college as opposed to online courses, this should shed light on any situation. With the extra guidance and assistance from a strong graduation team, students have the pieces they need to achieve just about any academic goal. This university will encourage their students to set goals if they have not already been accustomed. Being in touch with one’s academic needs, they should be able to make the best decision to positively influence their academic career. The most important thing to know is that eventually traditional classes will resort to online classes as students’ progress through their program. That piece of information may fear some potential candidates but for those who welcome the challenge, they will be able to experience the best of both worlds as I already have. Learning firsthand the significant points of both on-ground and online classes, which do you believe better complements your needs?

What are the logistical difficulties of the coalition action and what was the medias role Essay Example

What are the logistical difficulties of the coalition action and what was the medias role Essay On Wednesday the 19th of March 2003, America and England declared war on Iraq. They felt this to be necessary in order to stop Saddam Husseins Evil regime as he tells around 4 million people each year, they also thought war to be necessary in order to liberate the Iraqi people. Another reason they felt the need to proceed with this war because intelligence leads the politicians to believe that Saddam has chemical, biological and nuclear weapons of mass destruction which he uses to torture his own people. There are many more reasons for war, for example, Hussein is an evil dictator and has been treating his people badly for over 20 years and Iraqis have therefore been living in fear.Saddam also supports suicide bombers by paying their families large sums of money. Iraq has been committing war crimes for many years now while the world has tried to be tolerant. It is also important to remove Saddams power or end his reign before he attacks England, America, or any of the other countries in the United Nations in a form of revenge. U.S troops have found factories where the bombs were made including a chemical plant in the south of Baghdad. This war is also needed in order to make Iraq a democratic country so they can elect the own leader and make Iraqi people safe and stop Saddam from killing his own people, and using their money to pay for their torture and sometimes, their murder. However, many people disagree with the war and they show this by protesting. Most would say the reasons for not going to war greatly outweigh the reasons for war. Here are the majority of them. It would cost at least 19,000 pounds to make the necessary amount of bombs and this could be much more useful resources such as medical or educational equipment. Out of all U.S. military, over 51 have been killed and 14 are missing. Out of U.K. military, more than 12 troops are dead, and over 30 are missing. From Iraqi military, in excess of 1,500 have been killed , of the civilians the figures of prisoners of war that have been killed, injured or missing in action has risen to 5,898,000. Nearly 24,000 were killed or injured by daisy cutter bombs. So far there have been over 10,000 deaths each day. 9 news presenters have been killed, and two are missing. None of these deaths were necessary, they are the result of a war that most do not want, of find to be justified.People think that Tony Blair and George Bush are seeking revenge and probably have a hidden motive for this war. One of these could be that once the war is over, America will have to rebuild Iraq, when this is done, Iraq will then owe the U.S.A however much money they spent to rebuild Iraq. Iraq does not and will not have enough money to do this, so they will probably pay them with petroleum, as they are extremely rich in this source. There are three saying that have been used in protests against this war, The first isIncrease the peace make love not war.The second is,It is a war of hungry tiger and tied donkey (Ira q being the tied donkey)And the third is,Two wrongs dont make a rightEach of these sayings have a meaning behind them. The first one, I think, speaks for itself, is saying that whatever the situation, we should strive to achieve greater peace rather than retaliate or head for war as a resolution. The third saying tells us that you can not fight an injustice with an injustice, and quoting Martin Luther King,I truly believe that the eye for an eye method will ultimately leave everybody blind. Finally the second saying, this has the most meaning of the three as it shows that Iraqis have no choice but to fight, even though they will ultimately loose the war, no matter what they do, as they are too weak and they do not have the necessary equipment, soldiers or protection that they should if they were to stand a chance. There is one last very popular saying used in protests against war in Iraq,Not in my nameThis is a very powerful statement because as our leader and prime minister, Tony Bla ir should do as Great Britain wish, but by using this quote, they are saying that this war is not in our name and that he does not have the support of over 80% of the British population to go through and follow Bushs footsteps to war, he is doing what he wants to do but he is not fulfilling the wishes of Great Britain as a whole and so he is abusing his position and is not doing his job as he should be.Some people oppose the war because they do not want higher taxes, as this is what will happen when the war is over in order in order to afford the money rebuild Iraq. Others just do not agree with the suffering. For example one Iraqi man has lost eleven members of his family. Many children are malnourished and without families. Also, the body of an Iraqi baby was found on a main street and U.S troops give baby Muslims burials. For the few babies born since the war began, thousands have been killed. One particular boy called Ali Abbas was at home when a bomb went of very near by, his p arents and both of his brothers were killed, he himself was left without arms., Ali has become a bit of an icon of the suffering of Iraqis as he is one of thousands of children who have been injured and/or orphaned. Some disagree because it goes against general convention, the U.N did not want the war, and it goes against the rules of religion. Also they do not think that families should have been destroyed, due to the harm caused by some of the 2,000 lb TNTs or daisy cutter bombs, which have already killed over 24,000 people. Many people see it to be unnecessary for the U.S to have done some of the things they have, for example, they have bombed radio and TV stations in order to stop bias opinions being broadcast. They believe that the media lies, and that there are many innocent people that have been disabled, injured or even killed, and also that many women and children have been harmed both physically and emotionally, and some even mentally. However many families who have relatives in the war fear that they will become prisoners of war and be tortured on TV as other people and U.S troops have been.Logistical issues are all about tactics, problems, equipment, conditions and planning.Tactics were crucial in this war because in order for the U.S.A and the U.K to be successful, they had to think carefully about how they would overcome any obstacles that they could be faced with. They decided to do the following. They would stay in the deserts of Basra, and when Iraq were still not yet prepared the were going to slowly accelerate towards the centre of Baghdad, the capital city. On their route they would destroy anything that represented Saddam Husseins power such as portraits, statues, patches of land, houses or palaces or even his property. Once they are in Baghdad they will attempt to cease Saddam Hussein and his workers, in order to end the reign of Saddam Hussein and his evil ways. Some of the conditions that might cause problems for the troops are 24 hour sands torms which are also costly for the government who now have to fund for gas masks for each of the troops, these average out at around à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½12 each. Also the extreme heat could cause some annoyance as it is estimated that 10% of troops that will die, will die from some sort of heat related death. There are quite a few problems that may occur for the soldiers. Some of these are listed here. Supplies are a major issue. Important substances such as petrol, food and water take a long time to get to the soldiers as the tanks can only travel 30 miles a day. This is because the lorries behind them cannot drive through soft terrain, therefore the tanks have to build makeshift roads that the lorries can handle, therefore slowing down the tanks and all of the supplies. Supplies can also be slowed down by the narrow roads in Iraq, which are too narrow for the tanks to fit through. This would mean that the tanks would have to turn back and take a different route, therefore delaying the supp lies. Also if sand gets in the weapons they will be destroyed and with the sandstorms, this is hard to prevent. Another problem is the Iraqi people, because at the end of this, when they have removed Saddam, if the Iraqi people will not stand up for themselves and join America in their campaign, then all of the money, effort and lives would have been wasted.Their plan was also very important as they had to make sure they had gained the trust of the Iraqis as the last attempt to overthrow Saddam, led by George Bush Senior, ended in failure as the U.S backed out of Iraq too early, this led to Saddam Hussein slaughtering and torturing the millions of Iraqi people who stood up against him.The allied forces have a great range of weapons which they will use. These not only consist of riffles and batons, but also of B52 bombers, tanks and many more. However these must not be used in the wrong way, for example one bomb was dropped in a market square in the centre of Baghdad, killing many in nocent civilians and injuring even more. The media has played a critical role in this war. They have kept us informed about the war every day. Sky news even cut off all normal news, adverts and programs to make itself a 24 hour news report channel on the war in Iraq. This would have cost Sky a lot of money because they get the majority of their profit from companies and their advertisements, or television producing organisations for their items. When it comes to the newspapers, there have only been two newspapers that have been blatantly against the war on Iraq. They are The mirror and The evening standard. These two newspapers both constantly been writing everything that went wrong ended with innocent deaths or injuries, in order to try to change the opinions of the members of the public who did not oppose the war.The sun has supported the war from the get go. They have, on the contrary of the other two papers, made frequent positive remarks and reports on the war, and have made excu ses for any negative stories.Apart from the three newspapers that I have mentioned above , all the other have been very unbiased and seemingly quite honest. Many program timetables have been altered to broadcast as much up-to-date information as frequently as possible. The radio have allocated four different radio stations to broadcast 24hour reports in Arabic, for the first two, and the other two are in English. Finally music channels like MTV have banned all songs and videos that contain anything war related such as Madonnas song American lifeThe media reports in Iraq have been minimal as the Americans destroyed the broadcasting building in an attempt to stop biased reports.I believe that this war is wrong because it is not a war of religions, beliefs or truth as we would be led to believe, but a war of politics, and limbs, lives and families should not be hurt, destroyed or lo0st, for politics.

The Organizational Structure and Design of Veema Enterprises

The Organizational Structure and Design of Veema Enterprises Introduction There is no single organizational design and structure, which can be applied to all businesses; though all businesses show some level of organizational design and structure, which define the groups, and offers coordination for the different roles to be performed in the business.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Organizational Structure and Design of Veema Enterprises specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This paper is a review of the organizational structure and the design of Veema Ltd., a business specializing in the delivery of IT appliances, including computers, across the host state. Things to be discussed include work specialization, centralization and decentralization, departmentalization, formalization, chain of command, and the span of control at Veema Ltd (Adair 134). Discussion The field of work specialization Different jobs, roles and tasks, are assigned to the various departments within th e design, after being grouped into classes, placing those that are closely related together, and assigning them to the relevant departments. At Veema, the employees working at the administrative centers are those trained and skilled in administration, thus may not be able to work at the business units, for example, the technical department. An example here is the case of Janet Walters, who was required to work at the marketing department, during an internal case study, designed to evaluate the ability of different workers to operate at departments, other than those which they are specialized in. Ordinarily, she worked at the technical center; and had maintained top performance since her appointment. However, when placed at the sales department, she could not perform well, as comparable to the performance of the sales team members recruited one month before. The promotion of top management takes place, often, within the division or the department, which the workers operate under, as these are the fields that they are specialized in. For example, 3 months ago, John Smith, who was the marketing manager, was promoted to become the president of marketing, which fall under the same department of sales. These two variables under work specialization, show the importance of specialization, with regard to roles and skills of workers at Veema. The study offered insights into the management of operations and resources at the organization, as well as the significance of teams in pursuing organizational goals (Adair 134). Departmentalization Veema Ltd. runs on a design characteristic with mixed product and functional departmentalization. These can be split into two: the administrative units and the business center units, which are further split into different divisions and departments. Business units and subunits, are distinguishable on the basis of product departmentalization, which is simply the line of products that they trade in or supply.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More These include the computer sales division, which deals in computers and laptops; the internet set up and supplies division, which offers the services of internet installation and maintenance; the software division, which deals in the supply and trading of software applications; and the parts and accessories section, which trades in the parts and accessories of computers. These divisions create specialization zones, which allow for effective addressing of the needs of the customers. The administrative unit consists of a number of departments, which are departmentalized on the basis of the functions they play at the business. These include marketing, human resource, financial, technical, and global development (Handy 76). The marketing department is responsible for all the marketing activities of the venture, these including any sales promotions to be carried out by the business, and the allocation of sales staff and representatives, as well as the creation, communication, delivery and exchange offerings carried out between the business and its customers. Other minor roles are not listed here. The human resource department is responsible for the selection, assessment of performance, training, sourcing of workers and the rewarding of employees. This department further plays the role of overseeing organizational culture and leadership, as well as guaranteeing compliance to the laws on employment and labor at the areas of operation. The financial department is responsible for business budgeting, administration of funds, the employment of expenditure and economy measures, manning all monetary activities and checking tax compliance. The technical department is responsible for the technical functions of the venture, these including software and hardware testing, as well as the checking of faulty products still under warranty. The global develo pment department is responsible for the standardization of the processes and operational levels of the company, to ensure that they keep up to date, with reference to global levels of technical and software advancement (Covey 47). The chain of command Like at many other modernly run organizations, the chain of command has less significance at Veema Ltd. This is because the role of authority managers and supervisors is kept at minimum; as the employees of Veema are trained to act at exert levels across the different operational zones.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on The Organizational Structure and Design of Veema Enterprises specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, different from the traditional chain of command model, which runs orders from top to bottom, managers at the different operational centers engage in the oversight of the performance and the progress of the employees. At Veema, the expectation and obligation towards performance is expressed at the teams or individual levels. This is to mean that at Veema, the managers will oversee the operations of workers, without assigning roles and tasks to each worker. This is the case, as the teams take full responsibility for the division of work amongst the different players, who carry out their roles towards the realization of the common goals. On the basis of the account offered, unity of command is virtually not existent at Veema, as the majority of employees, who operate under teams, will report to the oversight manager or the managers from related departments (Handy 76). The span of control The trends in the structure and design of organizations are moving towards the establishment of larger control spans, as this helps reduce the costs. Also, this is helpful in speeding up decision-making and is a factor leading to an increase in the flexibility of organizations, with regard to change or other change demanding situations. The wid e control spans, further help the business in drawing closer to its customers and the principal impact of empowerment and the motivation of workers, which play a critical role in determining organizational success. The span of control for Veema is similar to the one described above, as depicted by the operational functions of the different oversight managers and other support management staff, including the top staff at the business. For example, Dr Jacob Jones, who is the managing director of the venture, is a player in the oversight of 8 dissimilar sectors, these including the internet services provision division. Dr. Jacobs is also an active player in corporate marketing, the technical support division and the global development division. The wide span of Dr. Jacob’s duties draws from his high competence in running such ventures, as he has run five different companies in a span of 25 years. Therefore, he is capable of offering support across a major number of the different departments and sectors. The second case is that of Janet Walters, who acts as a player and the oversight manager in charge of the technical department. She is also responsible for the running of three other divisions, including the software development, the parts and accessories department, as well as the computers sale section, as she is highly proficient with the running of technical application and operations. Miss Janet Walters has also been accorded the wide range of contribution, responsibility and oversight authority, as she has worked under the technical department for 3 IT establishments, over the past twelve years. However, the wide span of control does not mean that one worker can operate efficiently at every sector, as from her example, she was not able to perform at the sales department, which implies the need for a careful selection of the extension spans (Boddy 145).Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Under span of control, Veema calls for highly developed skills and intensive training, especially from those working at the key product sectors. As a result, the company offers further training to every worker on a two months basis, after which, it administers a skills-base evaluation to evaluate the level of competence. This is evident from the fact that, at the business units of Veema, the workers are able to arrange themselves into teams and arrive at decisions in a quick effective manner. At these centers, the workers also show that they are capable of carrying out their duties and responsibilities in an effective manner, without the supervision of top management or oversight control. Further, considering the wide coverage of the venture; the huge number of employees and the variety of operational locations which are operated from four reference departments, the operational abilities of the different workers is skilled and effective. This shows that the different workers at Veem a are highly skilled and proficient (Covey 47). Centralization and Decentralization at Veema From The operational design and the duty execution lines of the company, the company is fairly decentralized. The operational teams under the different departments and divisions at Veema formulate their own plans regarding projects. However, all these are done with reference to their skills and knowledge base, towards the realization of the goals set by the divisions, departments or the company as a whole. The managers at Veema rely on the experience and the expertise of the team members at the departmental or divisional levels of decision-making, these including those on goal setting. Additionally, the roles of the managers are more restricted to the oversight or progress and the provision of suggestions to the players when necessary. Decentralization is also evident from the mutual dependence of the different departments and divisions, which may request for the provision of the resources a vailable at others. From this case, it is also evident that decision-making at the organizational level cannot be carried out by one department, managerial level or other positional leaders. From the appearance that decision-making at Veema is not concentrated around certain departments, divisions or authorities, it is clear that Veema is operated on a decentralized mode of operation (Collins 145). Formalization at Veema From the account of Veema, it is clear that the company has spent a considerable effort, towards ensuring that the working environment available to its workers is highly flexible, and one with less boundaries. Further, the company encourages and promotes their employees to live a learning-process, whether at work or outside, as the company operates principally, on the highly developed employee skills-base. From following this approach, the company has created a highly skilled and intelligent workforce, which offers it competitive advantage, towards the meeting of co mpany goals at a considerable level of freedom. From the account therefore, it is clear that job behaviors are considerably not structured, which offers employees a substantial level of freedom as they do their work, thus are highly capable of exercising creativity and developing more effective problem-solving tactics (Handy 76). Conclusion There is no single organizational design or structure, which can be applied and used at different institutions or organizations. This is the case, as the design or structure adopted, depends on the needs of the organization, the area of coverage and the extent of service to be offered. For instance, a sole proprietorship may rely on the input of one individual, and still meet its obligations, while a company must have a large number of players working in harmony. This paper is an analysis of the organizational structure and design of Veema, an IT supplies company. Under work specialization, different departments and divisions are assigned differe nt roles and responsibilities. Under departmentalization, the company has an administrative and a business unit, which are further split into different divisions, which are the socialization zones. At Veema, the chain of command is virtually non-existent, as there are no definite lines of authority. In the area of span of control, the company’s management covers a wide coverage of duties, which are run through the input of the lower level employees. Under centralization, the company’s decisions are made at the different levels of operation and the different authority and functional roles, thus the company adopts a decentralized operation model. Under formalization, Veema is low; therefore the employees work in a highly free environment, which promotes personal responsibility. Adair, John. 100 Greatest Ideas for Effective Leadership. Case study 3 - Essay Example An organization that would have seen issues, past and present and because of such, Shapp would feel the need to seek the services of Peter Sneed. After analyzing what he felt to be the issues within his own company and considering the potential benefit of utilizing the services of Peter Sneed, he would seek to consult with another member of his company and initiate the discussion as the prospect of integrating the services of Mr. Sneed, with the inner structure of the company. As Julie Phillips, the co-worker in question of Shapp’s, would seek to become involved with the overall discussion, she would be seeking to do so, so that any difference in opinion could be addressed and that if integration were to in fact occur, the best possible outcome would be achieved. With the issues that would have come about in the past, her concerns would not be without merit. Out of all of the styles that are possible in terms of the OD system, the most likely candidate that Sneed should take on, would be the style involving interviewing those he would come in contact that would have to do with this new proposed task. It would enable him to have the opportunity to gather as much information as possible from the available stakeholders and in doing so, would be able to come with the best possible picture, as to where to begin in terms of aiding those involved with the company and the organization itself. With everything that is known about Peter Sneed, this situation alluded to that would involve Henry Shapp and his organization, would be something that Sneed should take on. He would have the necessary background from his previous experiences, to work with Julie Phillips and Mr. Shapp, as well as their other co-workers, with the shared goal of seeking the best possible outcome for the company and its workers. One of the first actions taken, in terms of strategy, should be the approach and engagement of all

Catharine bond hill - Term Paper Example According to recent research, fully 80% of all economic majors and postgraduates within the United States are men all stop this is a shocking statistic due to the fact that women comprise upwards of 60% of all college and university enrollment within the United States at the given time. Likewise, the purpose of this brief analysis will be to underscore the importance that women play within this field and draw particular inference with regards to the impacts they can have based upon the life and experience of what can only be described as an exceptional woman within the field. In such a way, the preceding analysis will seek to draw inference based upon the life of Catherine Bond Hill and the means by which women within her profession can seek to affected impacts, whom this profession specifically aims to serve, and the overall outlook and future of this profession with regards to the analysis of current and key statistics. Furthermore, it is the hope of this author that such an analys is will be the reader to an understanding of the increased importance that women should place upon the field of economics means by which they can seek to affect the quality within this field over time. ... However, as has been described, below and extent to which women began to be represented within economics is necessarily been constrained. Although it is beyond the scope of this analysis to determine whether or not this constraint is due to natural/personal choices or a systemic level of sexism within the field, nonetheless, the rate of growth that women have seen within economics over the past half-century has been abysmally low as compared to other fields of study. This very low rate of representation is something of a unique dynamic in an arena in which equality is virtually praised to have been met (Peterson 279). Whereas many professions and fields of academics aim to serve specific segments of society, the environment, science, or philosophy, is various profession and fields are generally concentric upon facilitating a key level of value within a specific community of stakeholders. Conversely, those individuals that engage in economic studies are necessarily interested in maxim izing value for each and every stakeholder within society. Such a macro view sets this field apart from any other fields. Accordingly, the need for women to be represented within it is great due to the fact that they are able to bring a unique perspective of a previously disenfranchised and ultimately silent group that represents fully 50% of the global population. In such a manner, the reader/researcher can understand the profession aims at seeking to understand and define a level of resource allocation with regards to the ever-increasing population and never-ending human demands that are placed upon finite resources (Dimand 15). Moreover, in an age of increasing environmental destruction and the impacts of global

International Political Economy Essay Example for Free

International Political Economy Essay International monetary fund (IMF) is an international organization composed currently with around 184 member countries representing almost all the nations in the world with an exception of a few. After the failure of Breton woods it came as a substitute of a regulatory monetary authority. The organization oversees the global financial system by implementing macroeconomics policy and financial policies aimed at stabilizing the economy’s the member nations. The organization was formed with an objective of stabilizing international monetary rates and enhancing economic development among the member states. Similarly International Monetary Fund offers leveraged loans to developing countries to stimulate their economic growth and development. At an extent IMF helps in promoting expansion, and balanced growth of international trade through co-operation with other bodies like World Trade Organization and World Bank. The organization also helps in developing a multilateral system for payment of current transactions. Despite the positive attributes from the organization it has come under severe attack from many experts and organization because of some of their inefficiency of their policies and their ineffectiveness to the targeted programs. Some of the policies used by the organization in trying to address the economic imbalances in developing nations have been ineffective as they have caused adverse effects to the member countries especially third world countries. In certain extent the organization has been used as a tool by the developed nations to propagate political interests of their â€Å"masters† through giving out conditional loans to poor nations and proposing for poor policy changes. The paper analyzes the roles of IMF and its policies and the effectiveness of those policies. Although other policies have used by the organization had positive results others technically contributed to economic underdevelopment in most poor nations. Roles of International Monetary Fund International monetary fund plays various significant roles in the global economy; International monetary fund was established to help member countries improve their economies by providing guidance and monitoring economic development in those nations. IMF is also engaged in ensuring there are sound financial policies formulated and implemented by the member states. Through extensive research and analysis the organization comes along with proposition which help in developing effective financial policies in tandem with country’s existing policies. Sound financial policies proposed by the organization are meant to strengthen the financial system of the global markets and member countries. â€Å"An effective financial system promotes economic growth and reduction of poverty by mobilizing savings and allocating them to productive uses† (World Bank, 2004, p. 72). International monetary fund provides three types of surveillance to member countries. That is bilateral surveillance, regional surveillance, and multilateral surveillance. Bilateral surveillance mostly involves discussions between international monetary fund, and the member country (Axel 2006, p 769-788). To begin the discussions in bilateral surveillance, IMF technocrats usually visit the member nation to collect information, and hold discussions with government officials in that country so as to gather enough information about the area. Apart from government officials, IMF experts also hold discussions with other members in the country such as labor unions and officials from the private sector and civil society. This is to gain more knowledge on the economic status of the country, and assess opportunities and potential threats. After the mission, the IMF staff holds meeting with the authorities to inform them on the findings obtained, risks and outlook. Bilateral surveillance helps identify risks to financial stability and international monetary fund in the member country. IMF uses bilateral surveillance to provide advice to member countries on the need to adjust certain policies. Bilateral surveillance helps IMF complement multilateral surveillance. Multilateral surveillance is important as it helps IMF strengthening its surveillance efforts. It helps IMF detect systemic risks and increase awareness of the risks in member countries. It also helps identify interdependencies in the international economy. Multilateral surveillance helps IMF identify developments in the global economy. It also helps the organization evaluate financial markets, and the outlook. Moreover, multilateral surveillance helps IMF identify changes to policy, and also effects caused by policies on member countries. IMF is working hard to enhance global discussions of economic connections among countries. This is to improve international trade among the countries (Axel 2006, p 769-788). IMF provides regional surveillance to member countries. Regional surveillance helps IMF monitor regional developments, and policies used by supra national authorities. Regional surveillance helps complement bilateral surveillance as it provides information from more than one country. Regional surveillance is important for members of currency unions. This is because policies in important areas of IMF are determined at regional level. In regional monitoring, discussions with country officials are carried out, and the report is represented separately. Formal procedures are used to conduct surveillance and evaluation over the monetary, and exchange rate policies of European nations. International monetary fund has strengthened its policies on monitoring measures so as to help eliminate concerns like vulnerability to balance of payment. These measures help in eliminating external sustainability and currency crisis in many countries and these are some of concerns that have affected many countries. IMF has developed several initiatives to help improve the effectiveness of bilateral trade. For example, the organization has established external vulnerability assessment. It has also developed initiatives to strengthen surveillance in the financial sector. The initiatives used to provide surveillance in the financial sector include a financial sector assessment program, and prevention of wastage of money. Other measures include prevention of terrorism financing, and assessment of offshore financial centre. IMF has also adopted other initiatives to help in improving its efforts. The organization has improved data provision to IMF, and also analyzing surveillance systems in member countries (Axel 2006, p 769-788). IMF helps in ensuring monetary policy in member countries are utilized effectively so as to prevent inflation (Axel 2006, p 769-788). International Monetary fund intervenes in trying to stabilize the exchange rate among member states. After the collapse of the Breton woods the main aim was to regulate the exchange rate of nations in order to avoid financial and economic imbalances IMF in this instance developed policies meant to help stabilize the exchange rate between countries. Mostly the organization favors a floating exchange rate and constant evaluates monitors and give recommendation on the appropriate exchange rate policies. At the same time IMF tries to develop monetary and exchange rate policy proposals in line with the individual countries policies. Exchange rate is critical in determination of a country’s monetary and trade policies. Monetary policy is used by monetary authorities to determine and regulate the circulation of money in the economy thus directly influencing the financial and economic measures to be taken. Determination of interest rates comes from the monetary policies decision taken. Adjustment of the interest rates either by lowering or increasing influence the pattern of the economic growth. Lower interest rates tend to stimulate economic growth and development. In this case monetary policy helps in enhancing economic growth, and stability in a country. IMF gives advices to countries on how to use monetary policy appropriately. Monetary policy is also used to prevent inflation in a country by raising interest rates. Monetary policy is important to member countries as it helps in improving economic status of the countries, and also enhancing development in the country. Countries with pegged exchange rates tend to unfairly compete with others in trade. Another role of International Monetary Fund is provision of loans to member countries. The organization provides loans to member countries experiencing balance of payment problems and economic difficulties. The loans provided by IMF are important to member countries as they help countries improve their international reserves, and pay for import (Axel 2006, p 769-788). The fund also helps countries stabilize currencies, and improve economic situations in the country so as to enhance economic growth in the country by adjusting policies to correct underlying problems. Funds provided by IMF help member countries improve national policies in the countries so as to eliminate problems. This is through restructuring of existing policies or creating new policies. IMF does not provide loans for specific projects in member countries. Member countries are encouraged to borrow from IMF if they have no enough funds to finance projects so as to meet their international payments. That is if the country cannot find enough financing to meet its net international payments and maintaining international buffer. IMF provides loans to member countries having financial problems so as to correct policies in the country, and carry out reforms. Countries are encouraged to use funds from IMF to adjust economic policies in the country so as to overcome economic crisis. This is important as it helps countries correct their financial balance, and improve conditions in the country. The funds enable countries to continue paying for imports, improve their international reserves and stabilize currencies. A member country has to follow the right lending process provided by IMF so as to get loans. IMF loans are provided under an agreement between the country, and IMF. The country provides enough reasons as to why it needs the money, and then economic program is established after the agreement. The program is established by country and IMF and presented to the right people. After the arrangement is approved then, IMF releases the funds in installments as the country continues to implement the program (Axel 2006, p 769-788). International monetary fund has established facilities that are customized to address specific situations of its member countries. Developing countries use different facilities from developed countries to access IMF loans. Low income countries use extended credit facility, and other facilities to borrow loans from IMF. These facilities allow countries to borrow on concession terms. Countries can access non- concessional loans via stand by arrangements, and other facilities that offer such loans. The organization provides emergency assistance to member countries to help them recover from natural disasters and conflicts (Axel 2006, p 769-788). Effectiveness of IMF Policies IMF uses various policies to help member countries improve their situations in the country, enhance economic growth, and financial stability. The policies include structural adjustment policies, financial crisis policies, and poverty reduction policies. Most people have criticized IMF policies for their ineffectiveness. This is because the policies implemented by International monetary organization have worsened economic conditions in member countries rather than improving the prevailing situations. The main role of IMF is to improve economic and financial stability in member countries using the policies named above. So far the IMF policies have not helped eliminate economic crisis in many countries and instead it has been contrary to expectations. The policies have affected developing countries more than developed countries as these countries depend on funds and advice from IMF to improve their economic status. (Robert and Jong-Wha 2002, p 1245-1269). Structural adjustment Policy is a shift of policies implemented by member nation’s mostly poor nations towards those guided and advised by IMF for purposes of qualifying to get financial and economic assistance. Structural adjustment policies have been criticized by scholars and experts as they have been seen as instruments of accelerating poverty and underdevelopment. Political shifts and governance reforms are always expected from the member nations expecting to benefit from the IMF. Most often the policies are in line with the system of governance of the developed nations (custodians of the IMF) which are deemed to be effective and efficient. Free trade and market liberalization is always encouraged by the IMF. Structural policies force countries to slash government spending and encourage privatization which also open up countries to exploitation by foreign investors. Structural adjustment policies have increased the level of poverty in many countries by causing many workers to loose jobs and reduction in income for workers due to free markets as most enterprises are sold to foreign investors who implement â€Å"effective† measures. The policies have given debt payment and economic development priority compared to education and health services. IMF has encouraged developing countries to lower living conditions of their citizens. This has affected provision of services in developing countries much. The policies have lead to shortage of the work force in developing countries as most companies, and health centers cannot afford to hire enough personnel (Ngaire 2002, p 83-100). IMF lending policies are condemned because of the conditionality associated with the policy. IMF forces member countries to adjust economic policies so as to overcome problems that led the countries to borrow funds from IMF. The international monetary lending policies are used to provide loans to member countries. The funds help member countries improve their economic status. International monetary lending policies do not serve member countries well. The policies are not flexible, and countries do not get enough money. The conditionality help IMF know if the country is able to repay the loan given. Developing countries do not get enough loans to finance projects in the country. Shortage of funds in developing countries hinders economic growth and increases poverty. The policy force developing countries cut their spending so as to have enough funds for development projects. The policies are not flexible enough to help developing countries get enough funds. In addition, the funds provided by international monetary fund are not enough to help countries eliminate problems. This prevents control of disasters and crisis in the country (Bird and Rowlands 2002, p 173-186). Conclusion The roles of IMF are very significant and critical in ensuring the stability and economic development of not only the member nations but the entire world in general. However Economic policies implemented by International monetary are not effective as they cause stifle economic growth. The economic policies are made to help developing countries improve economic growth, but they encourage economic stagnation. This is because developing countries cut spending in other sectors to get enough funds. Member countries have to cut spending on health sector, the education sector so as to get funds to adjust economic policies in the country. IMF encourages member countries to follow conditions established be fore accessing loans. The member countries are required to adjust policies in the country to overcome problems that have caused economic crisis in the country. This forces countries to concentrate on adjusting economic policies, but not development projects in those countries. This affects provision of crucial services in health care sectors and education. They also lead to lack of employment in developing countries. This leads to poor economic growth in developing countries (Axel 2004, p 445-464).

Racism and Jealousy in Othello Essay -- Shakespeare Othello Iago Essay

Racism and Jealousy in Othello The theme of racism is strongly depicted in William Shakespeare's Othello. It depicts the attitude of European society towards those that were different in colour, race and language. In Europe, people of white complexion were the majority and all other races were considered to be less important and inferior.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There are several characters in this play that portray this mentality. These characters include Brabantio, Roderigo and Emilia. But by far, the face of racism in this play is that of Iago, who makes his intentions crystal clear in his soliloquy where he states I hate the Moor, (I, iii, 379). Throughout the play, Iago lays forward a number of reasons for his hatred, which leads to the ruin of most of the characters.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It is most likely that the main reason behind Iago's hatred of Othello is the colour of his skin. Similar to many other people of his time, Iago would have had little or no racial tolerance for others, and thereby saw Othello as an outcast that had risen to success which is a factor contributing to another of his reasons for hatred, jealousy. From the very first act of this play, and indeed the very first scene, Iago hurls racial insults at Othello, an example of which is ...very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe (I, i, 89-90) - A statement that has both racist and vulgar connotations, as well as referring to Othello as a Barbary horse (I, i, 112) - Which is degrading him to the level of a filth...

The biggest reason is the fact that direct democracy is the fairest and purest way of making decisions as it is entirely up to the people to decide. Whilst you would not regularly use referendums to deal with every issue that parliament would have to deal with, they are a very good way of dealing with a single, Important Issue.Referendums are also good for the electorate. Many people believe that voting In mineral elections is pointless, largely because they believe that their vote doesn't really count In the grand scheme of things, especially If you live In an area where your party Is always voted In second. However with referendums, every vote counts, and the electorate recognize this and as a result turn out In massive numbers. This also strengthens the support of the political system In the people. It encourages people to become better educated In politics, whilst providing politicians with an insight into the electorate's opinions. However there are also a large amount of disadva ntages when it comes to referendums. The most obvious is that it blatantly undermines the representative democracy system used in this country, which generally works quite well. Many of the disadvantages with regards to referendums are evident in the current Scottish independence referendum. For example, if the result Is close, countries will often feel divided over the issue. This is the case in Scotland, where the polls indicate that the result is going to be very close, and there re definite tensions on the streets between the supporters of the two campaigns, with many no voters saying that they get abuse in the street if they biblically show their choice. There are problems with letting the public make such large decisions, as they will often be the wrong ones. People in this country tend to have ignorance towards politics, and so when these people are allowed to make such big decisions, they will often vote using their emotions, rather than choosing what is best. Multiple Career Opportunities in Architectural Drafting With CAD Software Training 2019

With a background consisting of just a few college courses and a long history of playing with model cars as a teenager, Derek Sanders has landed a successful, fulfilling career as a model maker. He was recently profiled in a popular career journal for his unique occupation. Designers consult Sanders with ideas sketched on sometimes only a napkin, and he proceeds to make a three-dimensional foam model with the assistance of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. What is the Function of an Architectural Drafter? Becoming a model maker is just one creative use of an Associates Degree in Architectural Drafting. An architectural drafter serves as the link between designer and final product. In short, an architectural drafter is responsible for making accurate drawings and plans.
